County Offaly is situated right in the middle of Ireland and is bordered by seven other counties. It covers an area of 1,999 km² and belongs to the province of Leinster. Its capital is Tullamore, a major commercial and industrial centre in the region of Offaly. In 1785 a hot-air balloon flying over the town fell to the ground and exploded. It destroyed over 100 houses in the centre, which then had to be rebuilt and restored. County Offaly possesses beautiful mountains, rivers and boglands. It has a wide range of attractions to discover and enjoy. The grounds and gardens of the Birr Castle Demesne offer a range of rare exotic plants. The river Shannon is superb for those who like fishing, canoeing or cruising as the water is unpolluted and houses all types of fish. County Offaly is a wonderful place for those who seek a break away to somewhere uncrowded and quiet.
